Let's Get Serious about Exercise, and Include Your Dog in the Fun too!
Now that the dog days of Summer are slipping away and the cooler temperatures of Fall are arriving, it's a great time to get outdoors for some wonderful fresh and air and exercise.
Consider ways you can include your dog so he/she can get some good exercise too!
Rather than enrolling Fido in a doggy aerobics class, why not take him along for some adventure together while getting in some great exercise at the same time?
Purina once conducted a survey in five major U.S. cities and found that 60 percent of pets were moderately to severely overweight. Some dogs were even suffering from weight-related health conditions.
We all know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and work to achieve this for ourselves, but did you realize that our pets need fitness goals too?
Dogs that get regular exercise have been found to be more relaxed, bark less, are better behaved, and have fewer problems chewing their food.
“A dog is probably going to have a better personality if it’s exercising, and maybe we will, too,” says Dr. Howard Erickson, Professor of Physiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University.
And just like people, dogs that stay in shape and consume a good diet have healthier hearts, more efficient respiratory systems, and stronger muscles and bones. Dr. Erickson stated that these dogs often live longer than more sedentary pets.
A healthier pet benefits you too and can be a motivating force in your workout routine. Stay accountable to your own fitness goals and reduce the hum drum of a standard routine by including your favorite four-legged friend to tag along!
